In 2025, SWA launched the first Climate Action Plan of its kind for a landscape architecture firm, setting a precedent for how design practices can take responsibility for their own carbon impact.

To help shape this landmark document, SWA engaged Pamela Conrad of Climate Positive Design, whose leadership as Chair and Lead Author of the ASLA Climate Action Plan and collaborations with the United Nations provided unique global perspective and expertise. Conrad guided SWA in developing strategies to decarbonize both their design practice and firm operations, ensuring the plan addressed emissions reduction across projects, materials, travel, and office practices.

Released in February 2025, the plan aligns with international climate targets and demonstrates the critical role design firms can play in advancing global climate action. By embedding accountability and measurable goals, SWA’s Climate Action Plan positions the firm as a leader in the profession and a model for how landscape architecture practices worldwide can take bold, practical steps toward a low-carbon, resilient future.
