The YouTube Campus Expansion in San Bruno demonstrates how landscape architecture can advance climate action, biodiversity, and human well-being at scale. As sustainability advisors and project designers, Pamela Conrad and Eustacia Brossart guided the project’s carbon analysis using the Pathfinder tool developed by Climate Positive Design, helping the team establish measurable climate performance goals. The campus became one of the first built projects to undertake the Climate Positive Design Challenge and achieve Climate Positive status within 10 years, offsetting its entire landscape carbon footprint while improving performance by 52% compared to a conventional baseline—aligning with global UN climate targets.
Key carbon reduction strategies included extensive afforestation with 445 native trees, reuse of on-site eucalyptus trees milled into landscape elements such as amphitheater seating and site furnishings, specification of low-carbon materials, and strategic grading that minimized the need for carbon-intensive retaining walls. The landscape also delivers significant biodiversity net gain through 2.8 acres of native habitat, including oak woodland, coastal scrub, grassland, monarch, and pollinator gardens. These ecologically rich outdoor spaces provide employees with daily access to nature, supporting biophilia, wellness, collaboration, and connection while enhancing habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
